About

Why Denmark?

Denmark's capital is compact, cycle-friendly and built around the kind of considered, unhurried quality of life that makes it consistently ranked among the world's happiest cities.

For a solo traveller, Copenhagen's culture of independent coffee shops, world-class restaurants and long, candle-lit evenings makes it one of the most naturally welcoming cities in Europe.

Solo travel

Why it works.

Copenhagen is a city designed for slow, curious exploration. Its culture of communal seating, bar counters and café society means eating and drinking alone is entirely unremarkable, and often the starting point for a good conversation.

Where to base yourself

Best areas.

Nørrebro & Vesterbro

The creative quarters, independent coffee, excellent natural wine bars and neighbourhood restaurants.

The city centre & Nyhavn

The waterfront, the design museums and the city's most photographed canal.

Frederiksberg & the parks

A quieter, residential quarter with beautiful gardens and a slower pace.

When to go

May to September for the long evenings and the outdoor culture at its best. December brings a magical hygge atmosphere with Christmas markets and candlelit interiors. Winter is cold but the city is extraordinarily cosy.

Getting around

Copenhagen is best explored by bicycle, rental is easy and the cycle lanes are excellent. The metro and S-train reach further areas quickly. Alma will ensure your neighbourhood is chosen for walkability and easy access.
