About

Why Ireland?

Ireland is a place where the landscape changes every few miles and the welcome never does. From Dublin's Georgian squares to the wild Atlantic Way, it is one of the most instinctively solo-friendly countries in the world.

The combination of dramatic natural scenery, a rich literary and musical culture, and pubs that are genuinely warm social spaces makes solo travel here feel effortless.

Solo travel

Why it works.

Ireland's pub culture is the best natural social infrastructure for a solo traveller: warm, conversational and entirely comfortable for a woman alone. Dublin, Galway and Kilkenny are all walkable and easy, while the countryside rewards a self-driven pace.

Where to base yourself

Best areas.

Dublin

Georgian squares, world-class galleries and the most welcoming pub culture in Europe.

Galway & the west

A lively, creative city with the Wild Atlantic Way and Connemara on the doorstep.

The Ring of Kerry & Cork

Ireland's most dramatic coastal scenery, with excellent food in Cork city.

When to go

May, June and September offer the best combination of light, temperature and passable weather. July and August are busiest. Winter is dramatic and quiet, with the landscapes at their most elemental.

Getting around

A hire car is essential for the countryside and coast. Dublin and Galway are walkable cities. Alma will route the driving days so the journey itself is part of the experience.
