About

Why Sicily?

Sicily sits at the crossroads of every civilisation that ever passed through the Mediterranean, Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman, and carries all of it in its architecture, food and light.

For a solo traveller, it offers remarkable depth: ancient sites in the morning, a Baroque city for lunch, black-sand beaches by afternoon and the best arancini of your life whenever hunger strikes.

Solo travel

Why it works.

Palermo, Catania and Siracusa are lively cities where eating and wandering alone feels natural. Markets, street food stalls and café culture make mornings easy, and the island is compact enough to move around by train or bus.

Where to base yourself

Best areas.

Palermo & the northwest

The capital's markets, street food and layered architectural history.

Siracusa & the southeast

A Greek island city on the sea, baroque Noto nearby and quiet coves.

The Aeolian Islands

A ferry north for volcanic islands, clear water and a slower pace.

When to go

May, June and September are ideal, warm sea, manageable crowds and the landscapes at their most varied. July and August are beautiful but hot and busy; spring brings wildflowers and festivals.

Getting around

Trains link Palermo, Catania and Siracusa; buses reach smaller towns. Ferries connect the mainland and the Aeolians. A car helps for rural areas and the south coast. Alma will structure the route so travel is part of the experience.
