Slovakia
A fairy-tale capital, castle-dotted mountains and very few other tourists.
Why Slovakia?
Slovakia offers something increasingly rare in Europe: genuine discovery. Bratislava's old town is small, charming and very manageable, while the Tatra mountains rank among the continent's most dramatic hiking landscapes.
For a solo traveller, the combination of a walkable city with easy onward connections to extraordinary natural scenery, and without the crowds of better-known destinations, makes Slovakia quietly outstanding.
Why it works.
Bratislava's old town is compact enough to feel comfortable within a morning. The city has a warm, European café culture and English is widely spoken. The Tatras offer well-marked hiking trails and mountain huts for sociable solo evenings.
Best areas.
Bratislava old town
Small, atmospheric and easily walkable, a city that rewards a slow afternoon.
The High Tatras
Slovakia's dramatic mountain spine, serious hiking and alpine lakes.
Bojnice & the castle country
Fairy-tale medieval castles scattered through a quiet, green countryside.
June to September for hiking, warm days and the mountains at their most accessible. December and January bring snow and a beautiful, quiet atmosphere. Spring and autumn are ideal for the city.
Bratislava is walkable; trains and buses reach the Tatras and other towns from the capital. The city is well-connected to Vienna and Budapest if you are combining countries. Alma will structure the route to make the most of the region.
