Sweden
Stockholm's islands, northern light and quiet forests.
Why Sweden?
Sweden's capital is one of Europe's most quietly beautiful cities: a sprawl of islands, water and 17th-century streets that rewards a traveller who takes her time.
Beyond Stockholm, Sweden opens into a landscape of birch forests, red-painted villages and an archipelago of 30,000 islands, some of the most restorative scenery in northern Europe.
Why it works.
Stockholm's café culture, its design-focused museum scene and the easy calm of a Swedish city make it an excellent solo destination. Swedes are reserved but warm, and the city's layout, island by island, gives each day a natural structure.
Best areas.
Gamla Stan & Södermalm
The old town and the creative island just south, cobblestones, bookshops and excellent coffee.
Östermalm & Djurgården
The Vasa Museum, open-air museum and a quieter, leafy stretch of the city.
The Stockholm Archipelago
A ferry to Sandhamn or Vaxholm for a slow island day or an overnight.
June to August for the midnight sun, the archipelago and the city's outdoor life at its most joyful. September brings golden light and fewer tourists. Winter is cold and dark but the city is beautifully atmospheric.
Stockholm's metro, trams and ferries make the city easy to navigate. The archipelago is reached by Waxholmsbolaget ferry. Alma will structure your days so the water crossings feel like part of the trip, not logistics.
